US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick has hinted that President Donald Trump is considering lowering tariffs on Mexico and Canada. This potential adjustment in Trump trade policies could ease economic tensions between the neighboring countries.
Lutnick revealed in an interview that both Canada and Mexico have been negotiating efforts to combat the flow of synthetic opioid fentanyl into the US. However, Canada’s Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly stated that her office had not been formally contacted about the matter.

During his address to Congress, Trump focused heavily on his trade policies but did not confirm whether the new tariffs would be lifted.

Trump, however, remained firm, stating on his Truth Social platform:
“If Canada imposes tariffs on us, we will immediately match them with reciprocal tariffs.”
Trudeau dismissed Trump’s stance, stating:
“Canada will not bow to pressure, and our economy will remain independent.”
